Groups

Thank you for your interest in our groups. The goal of our groups is to provide a supportive environment for change in a community setting. For adults, adolescents and parents alike, knowing that others have similar experiences and sharing those experiences can facilitate change and growth in a far more rapid rate than change alone. Inherent to the group process is creating a good match between group participants.

To this end, we strive to create groups that are a good fit for the participants. If you are interested in attending a group, we ask that your phone our office at 404.351.2008.

  • For adult psycotherapy and adolescent groups we will suggest group placements that we feel will be a good fit. New groups will be formed upon demand. By doing this we can also customize the time of the group to maximize participation.
  • Our parenting, couples and DBT workshops will be offered upon demand. Again, please let us know of your interest by phoning our office and you will be contacted as these workshops are forming.

    Parenting Teens

Parenting an adolescent is not an easy job -- it can be frustrating, agonizing and the biggest challenge of our lives. Most of us are good parents who carry a desire to see our teens succeed, a belief in strong communication and the motivation to be better parents. So, why do we feel that it's not good enough?

Join us for commiseration and inspiration in the challenges involved in parenting teens. This four week parenting course focuses on the building blocks of a strong teen-parent relationship- understanding, communication, and respect. Discussions will be guided to aid in learning the skills necessary to enforce limits with your teen while allowing them to reach their potential developmentally.

    Parenting Children

Parenting is a challenge for anyone. Parenting a high maintenance child requires parenting skills "above and beyond." Interacting with your child, their school, and other professionals are all necessary skills involved in their care.

We have developed a parenting group geared specifically towards addressing the issues facing parents of children with ADHD and learning challenges.

This four week parenting course includes an optional, simultaneous children's group involving an activity mixed with social skills training.

We also offer parenting seminars and lunch hour workshops throughout the year.

    Adolescents- General

Peer relationships gain tremendous importance during the teen years. A common refrain heard from our adolescent patients is "I don't need to be here. I talk to my friends about this stuff." Unfortunately, the issues facing our adolescents today are often difficult for adults to handle, much less teens.

We have developed an adolescent psychotherapy group which will allow teenagers to talk with their peers about important issues with the facillitation of a therapist. The goals include improving communication and self-esteem. We will also focus on how one moves through the internal and social changes of adolescence.

    Adolescents- College Bound

This group was created to address the challenges facing people moving away to college. The goal is to learn and refine skills in coping with the major life change of moving to college. Skills worked on include: toleration of stress, mindfulness, and interacting successfully with peers and professors.

    Adult- DBT

This group will focus on learning and then refining skills leading to more positive behavioral, emotional, and thinking patterns. We will explore techniques to calm and center thinking. These skills will then be applied to centering thinking while in crisis with the final goal of reducing the level of distress in our lives.

Do you feel that personal chaos, impulsive actions and emotional roller-coasters define your life? Are you interested in learning how cope more effectively with life crises and better regulate your emotions?

We are offering a new group that is designed to address:

  • crisis tolerance
  • emotional regulation
  • interpersonal effectiveness.

The group will run in three 8-week segments with each segment focused on a particular skill, "distress tolerance", "emotion regulation", and "interpersonal effectiveness".

Please note that while this group is focused on understanding behavior and how to make change it is not a psychodynamic group, but rather a "skills training" group. In other words, it will more resemble attending a course than being in therapy. In fact, you are strongly encouraged to remain in individual therapy during this group.
